Producer responsibility for large industrial batteries
In 2009, Producer Responsibility was extended to include batteries, and almost overnight we took over the collection and recycling responsibility for all small household batteries. Since then, development has led to that an increasing number of larger batteries, so-called industrial batteries, are being used outside of professional settings. One example is electric vehicle batteries, that immediately must be collected and taken care of when they are worn out. This has led to a need for a national collection system for the larger batteries as well.
El-Kretsen provides a sustainable collection solution for the new generation’s industrial batteries. This means that we help the producer to meet both the regulatory requirements as well as logistical and environmental challenges.
Our collection solution is based on battery producers being connected to El-Kretsen. Unlike small batteries and electronics, you are not billed until the industrial battery is processed for recycling. As a customer, you have the possibility to participate in shaping the system per your needs. This way, you can always keep track of expenses and control how you want to handle your batteries. You are not locked up in a system and do not have to tie up capital for future recycling.
Large industrial batteries for machines and electric vehicles
At El-Kretsen you don’t need to pay for the collection, handling and recycling of a large industrial battery until it is planned to be demounted and put out of use. Large industrial batteries are not portable and are made exclusively for industrial or other professional usage or to be used in electric vehicles.
Large industrial batteries includes batteries in electric and hybrid electric cars and industrial machines among others. These batteries are handled a little differently than portable batteries and portable industrial batteries because of the higher security demands.
The collection is made primarily from locations that you decide upon as we sign an affiliate agreement. If we take an electric car battery as an example it could be collected straight from the workshop that has demounted the battery.
As a producer of larger industrial batteries you have to be part of a nationally approved collection system, mark your products and make sure the end-consumer gets the information on how to recycle the used battery. It is also mandatory to send an annual report to the EPA. El-Kretsen will help you with your entire producer responsibility and guide you with knowledge and counselling to assure that your company is prepared for any eventual updates to the regulations.
The recycling of an electric car battery
The battery can account for as much as 30% of the weight of an electric passenger car. It is not uncommon for the battery to weigh between 300-600 kg. In electric trucks, machines and trucks, the battery can vary even more in weight.
The electric car battery is packed in a secure transport box and driven by a specially trained carrier.
The battery is drained of power, if possible, we ensure that the electricity remaining in the battery is used locally. After that the battery is dismantled manually.
The various components are sorted and processed in several steps to make use of as much of the material as possible. The material that cannot be re-used is recycled or disposed of in the best possible way based on environmental requirements.
