Batterikretsen expands battery recycling services in partnership with Stena Recycling
20 October 2026
Batterikretsen has entered into a new partnership agreement with Stena Recycling. Through this collaboration, Batterikretsen’s affiliated producers will gain access to a comprehensive solution that supports compliance with the new EU Battery Regulation while facilitating the transition towards a more circular battery value chain.
Batterikretsen supports companies placing batteries on the Swedish market in fulfilling their obligations under extended producer responsibility (EPR) regulations. To ensure the efficient and sustainable management of end-of-life batteries, Batterikretsen has now entered into an agreement with Stena Recycling as its partner for larger batteries from vehicles and industrial applications. Stena Recycling will be responsible for the collection, transportation, and treatment of various types of spent batteries, with the recovered materials subsequently being recycled into raw materials for new products.
“As requirements for battery sustainability, traceability, and recycling continue to increase, we need a partner capable of managing the entire value chain. Stena Recycling has developed unique capabilities, ranging from safe collection and logistics to advanced recycling and the marketing of recovered materials. This gives our affiliated producers confidence that their producer responsibility obligations are being managed efficiently and in line with both current and future requirements “, says Fredrik Benson, CEO of Batterikretsen.
Extensive Battery Management Capabilities
The new Battery Regulation introduces stricter requirements throughout the battery life cycle, from raw material extraction to recycling. These requirements include enhanced traceability, higher material recovery targets, and improved opportunities to establish circular material flows. In response, Stena Recycling has built substantial battery management capabilities and invested more than SEK 500 million in the area. The company operates one of Europe’s largest battery recycling facilities in Halmstad and has established battery collection centres in several European countries.
“We are pleased and proud that Batterikretsen has chosen us as its partner. The new EU regulatory framework places greater demands on expertise, traceability, and operational capability throughout the value chain. We have developed the knowledge, processes, and infrastructure needed to help producer responsibility organisations and producers navigate the evolving regulatory landscape while maximising the recovery of valuable materials “, says Per Hellberg, Head of Product Area Batteries at Stena Recyling.

Batterikretsen is a wholly owned subsidiary of El-Kretsen and, since 2026, an approved Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) for all five battery categories: portable batteries, batteries for light means of transport (LMT), starter batteries, industrial batteries, and electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
Drawing on El-Kretsen’s 25 years of experience in producer responsibility, Batterikretsen provides Swedish and international battery producers with a comprehensive solution for extended producer responsibility compliance. Through a nationwide collection and recycling system, operated in partnership with selected service providers, Batterikretsen contributes to safe battery management, efficient resource utilisation, and the development of circular material flows.
